I work with earthenware clay, primarily creating thrown pieces. My work is inspired by the gardens, woods and rivers that surround my studio.
I studied pottery at Marlboro College in the early 70's with Malcolm "Orv" Wright, who had apprenticed in Japan with National Living Treasure, Taroueman Nakazato XII. Orv was a wonderful teacher and inspiration. I headed off to Japan during my Junior year at college and spent two semesters researching the aesthetic influence of 16th century style wood burning kilns on the pottery produced at three of the ancient kiln sites surrounding Kyoto. I returned to Marlboro for my Senior year and then apprenticed at Orv's studio, for the next year and a half. This training set my direction and love of functional pottery.
I enjoy the challenge of creating pieces that work well, are aesthetically pleasing and can last a lifetime. Though originally from Caribou, Maine my first studios were in Kennebunk and Portland Maine where I developed and produced a line of tableware and started a small tile business. Later I moved to the small farming community of Whitefield, Maine and established Whitefield Pottery.
After bisque firing all pieces are individually decorated, glazed, and fired to 1900 Fahrenheit. All pieces are lead free and safe for use in the microwave and dishwasher.
