David and Laurel are the husband and wife team of Cedar Mountain Potters. They have been working in their studios at their 1800’s era farm in Parsonsfield, Maine since 1999.
David’s sculpture and functional work is hand thrown or hand built using stoneware and porcelain clays. These pieces are often glazed with local clay, wood ash, and other traditional glazes. He also regularly participates with a group of potters in the firing of a Japanese styled, anagama wood-fire kiln. David has been making pottery and sculpture for more than 40 years. He holds a Master of Fine Arts from Cranbrook Art Academy in Bloomfield Hills, MI.
Laurel’s sculpture and functional work is both wheel thrown and hand built. Her pots are heavy, their forms simple, visually massive, their glazing quiet, their formation subtle and emotional. Her goal is to direct attention away from surface, and to offer instead a visceral experience of personal strength and knowing that is found only in the body. Laurel has been working in clay for 28 years, full time for 13. She holds a Masters in Art Therapy from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA.
